Expanding the scope of L2 intelligibility research

This study investigated relationships among intelligibility, comprehensibility, and accentedness in the speech of L2 learners Spanish who completed a prompted response speaking task. Thirty native listeners from Spain were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk to transcribe rate extracted utterances, which also coded for grammatical phonemic errors, rate. Descriptively, although most utterances intelligible, their comprehensibility varied substantially. Mixed-effects modeling showed that was significantly associated with intelligibility whereas not. Additionally, errors significant predictors but only related accentedness. Overall, displayed stronger negative association listener-based dimensions than errors. These findings suggest English-speaking are not as uniformly intelligible comprehensible FL instructors might believe shed light on constructs an other English.
